red;">1999年，操劳了一辈子的母亲患上食道癌，何昌垂在回国短暂地陪伴探望后，假期结束，只得重返罗马。没想到，他离开老家两个小时后母亲就走了。每次想起，他总是遗憾为何不多留两小时，而母亲临终前“再也不能给他煮一碗米丸汤”的呢喃，一直柔柔地牵痛他的心。</span></p><p style="text-indent:2.1875em;"><br/></p><section red;">2013年，从联合国完全退下来后，何昌垂选择定居北京，时常在北京和家乡之间奔走。一种时不我待的使命感，促使着他继续前行。他协助建立了数字中国研究院并担任了3年的执行院长，积极支持数字峰会在福州举办；他在北大当了十年特聘教授，还应邀在全国多所高校担任校外导师、开设培养全球胜任力课程，呼吁加强国际化人才培养，帮助选送推荐更多年轻人到联合国实习或工作。</span><br/></p><p style="line-height: 2em;text-indent: 2.125em;"><br/></p><p style="line-height: 2em;text-indent: 2.125em;"><span style="font-size: 16px;letter-spacing: 1px;">联合国大约在20世纪70年代末才开始聘用中国大陆职员。何昌垂说：“我初到亚太经社会时，秘书处只有4名中国人，其中一位还是来自台湾的。这几年中国籍职员人数在增加，但低编低职的现状还不能从根本上扭转。”他希望有更多人，特别是优秀青年沿着他开辟的路，走入联合国，不断提升中国在国际上的整体影响力。</span></p><p style="line-height:
